Hello Interns,
Here is Blog Post #2.
In the book Careers in Media, you need to read/review the following:
1. Read Chapter 1 for an overview of the industry
2. Read the chapter related to the area in which you are most interested in working. This may or may not be connected to your current internship.
3. Throughout the book, there are Personal Profiles in which people describe how they got their job. You should read these whether they are in the chapter related to your area of interest or not. They provide helpful tips for job searching.
4. Read Appendix B: Employment websites
After doing the reading and reviewing the job search web sites, write an action plan for the next steps in your career based upon what you learned. If you are graduating, what do you need to do over the next two months in order to land a job? If you have a year or more before you graduate, what do you need to do to best position yourself to be successful when you do graduate?
Be specific. This should include everything from research you need to do on companies, to how you will improve your resume, to how you will put a plan together for networking within the industry. The more thoroughly you think about this (and then hopefully execute it), the more likely you will be to land the job you want. (You may bullet point your action plan, but the bullets should have some substance. For example, "Revise resume" is not an acceptable bullet point). If you have questions, come see me during office hours.
This blog post is due Monday, Nov. 3.
Just a reminder: You are receiving individual grades on each of your blog post questions based upon the quality of your engagement, reflection, and conversations with your peers.

I had read this introduction last semester, but since graduation is closer I think that re-reading the overview of the industry was great at putting things into perspective. I found the occupational statistics to be reassuring; the jobs are out there so it just depends on how you go about getting them.
ReplyDeleteIn my first semester of interning, I learned the importance of becoming indispensable and that has stuck with me. At the moment, my goal is to create an impact and network as much as possible because the company has hired their interns in the past. I try to divide my time between working on the artist’s websites, social media, and streaming platforms, so that I can learn as much as possible in the time I have left. I exchanged numbers with the interns at the other labels so I plan to keep in touch with them. I also hope to maintain the relationships I have with the digital marketing team through email and social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc).
I have already started to look for entry-level jobs in digital media so I am keeping my resume updated. After reading the “career objectives after graduation” section in the first chapter I revised my objective to include short-term goals as well. I think it is important not to worry about the “what-if’s” and just focus on what is in front of me. My supervisor has discussed the experiences I should add to my resume from the work I have done so far so I have also incorporated her feedback.
In the weekly meetings with my supervisor, I have asked what steps she took to land the job she has now in order to figure out what steps I should take after graduation. I have already learned the basics of HTML and CSS coding, but I want to be able to create more complex/interactive graphics, pages, and templates. Following in the path of my current and past supervisor, I have begun researching classes so I can get a digital design certificate. In the meantime, I am working on my personal website, chahitalalwani.com, so I can show rather than just tell my skills.
I read the chapter on New Media and I found the personal profile of Kate Gelsthorpe to be the most helpful. Her job duties and typical day sound very similar to the work I am doing now so reading her “tips, hints, advice, or anecdotes” was interesting. As I look for a job in the future, I will try to learn more about what digital technologies a company uses for production and development. I think this will help me understand the company’s mission therefore allowing me to grasp what they are looking for in a candidate.
Looking at Appendix B, I visited a couple of the websites, including tvandradiojobs, careerbuilder, and narip. I also use Glassdoor and Findspark so every week I try and go through the new job listings to see if I fit the qualifications for any available positions.
Hopefully this plan will help me achieve my goals after I graduate.
