Hello Interns!

In a few sentences, state where you are working and what your primary responsibilities are. Then, please post your thoughtful responses to the following questions:

1. What have you learned about working in the media that you did not know before your internship? Include here processes and procedures, job titles, you never knew of, how companies interact with other companies, and so on.

2. Is the internship what you expected? Why, or why not?

3. Is there any way you could improve your internship experience? Explain how.

Remember this post should be like a journal entry. It is your thoughts and experiences and there are no right or wrong answers. However, it is a required assignment and proper grammar, spelling, thoughtfulness will count.

Also, feel free to comment on each others' posts.

Please post your comments as a comment to my post. For those of you who took this same course last semester, I will expect you to contribute differently from what you did last time. While these are the same questions, your experiences are not.

  1. Hi everyone! My name is Kristine Garcia, and I am currently interning at Advanced Alternative Media (AAM) two days a week. AAM is a music management company that represents music talent and their businesses, including songwriters, producers, mixers, and music engineers. As of right now, I’m in charge of updating the social media accounts and being up to date with our clients, monitoring if any news comes up with their association. I also help out with managerial work such as logging information on clients and updating contact lists, etc.

    1. Before interning here, I didn’t know how connected the music world was, since the music industry is so large. I didn’t know much about music management and all the work it takes to manage everything the company does, such as recording splits on the amount of work their specific clients did on a specific track or song. For the most part, I’m familiar with all the positions people in the company possess. There is, however, a college radio station that’s associated with AAM, which i think is pretty cool! In terms of interacting with other companies, from what I’ve seen, they have a great bond with people of other companies, especially since their clients work with well-known artists of any music genre (i.e Taylor Swift, 5 Seconds of Summer).

2.Going into the internship, I didn’t know what to expect. Having previously interned with SiriusXM where I was on my feet every minute of the day, I thought it’d be the same. However, I’m in front of the computer, checking Twitter, Google updates, and typing up something for the client book. I’m not complaining about not being on my feet all the time, I just have to get used to the change from what I was used to.

3.To improve my internship experience, I’d definitely ask more questions. Everyone says “there’s no such thing as a dumb question,” so even though I’d be embarrassed about a question, I know my mentors will be happy to answer. With them recently graduating college and getting a job, they’ve been in my position and are happy to help with any questions I have. I think I’d also offer to do more things, if needed. I know my mentors have a lot of work, and helping them out would definitely benefit them, and allow me to learn more about the company.

  2. Hi everyone! My name is Chahita and I am an intern at Sony Music Entertainment. For three days a week, I intern in the digital marketing department for Legacy Recordings. My primary responsibilities include scheduling social media posts, filtering/uploading content on the artist’s websites, creating smartURLs as well as retargeting pixels, and various other tasks. For the majority of last year I was an intern for the Elvis Duran show so this semester has been an interesting change of pace.

    1. What have you learned about working in the media that you did not know before your internship? Include here processes and procedures, job titles, you never knew of, how companies interact with other companies, and so on.
My assignments change frequently so I have been able to learn a variety of things on different hosting platforms such as WordPress and Drupal. Some of the artist’s websites are being updated so I have learned that comps are created in order to view and adjust the final layout before an actual site is coded. The website layout and designs are not random, they’re based off of a couple things, including: how the artist presents themselves, what their image is, what direction you want to take the website in, what content is necessary, what the budget for the project is, and what the estate approves. Before the internship, I was not aware that layouts were tailored based on performance. I found the role that statistics plays in content layout to be interesting since one can see how many “clicks” a particular page is generating, what page a person has been directed from, where they are located, and other detailed data.

    2. Is the internship what you expected? Why, or why not?
This internship has definitely surpassed my expectations. When I first began, the company held an orientation so I was able to get to know the interns at Epic, Columbia, and RCA Records. Since I am a senior, I think this was a great opportunity to network. With every task that I am assigned I get an explanation so I am aware of the bigger picture. It’s great to be kept in the loop so that I know what role I play. My supervisor has made this experience wonderful so far. At the end of each week we have a meeting to discuss what I have been learning, what I would like to work on, and any questions I might have. Even though I have my own desk and I am left to my own devices, I like that everything is a collaborative effort.

    3. Is there any way you could improve your internship experience? Explain how.
At this point, I don’t think that there is any way I could improve this experience. I am grateful for the opportunity and I cannot wait to see what the next few months have in store.

  3. My name is Steven Valerio and I am Senior majoring in Media Studies. I am currently interning for CINQUA, which is a small documentary company that specializes in short form video. This is my first internship.

1)There are many things that I am learning as the weeks of me doing video editing and shooting go by. To be one hundred percent honest, I did not realize the amount of time each client needs in order for their requests to be fulfilled. Each client we deal with is met with complete focus, which means we devote weeks to one client at a time. With the media I am involved with, I am learning how to really take control and be one with the camera equipment. Understanding the different techniques of shooting, making sure my views are not obstructed (which is easy to overlook) and understanding each shot is telling a different story. I have also learned the business side of things. Although it is our art and we interpret things differently, we also have to meet the demands of our clients. Sometimes what we think is pure art, they don’t see the vision in how it should represent their company. What I have learned most of all is to be intuitive in making artistic decisions when working in video editing, and learning how to see the bigger picture even before the video shooting begins. Have a vision first, then execute.

    2) I am very pleased to say that the internship is everything I expected and more. I am busy for most of the days that I am working there. My boss John Carluccio gave me a clear blueprint into what I was getting into once I was officially hired. I was able to work the Marc Jacobs fashion show this past “Fashion Week.” I was also honored to do video shooting of the art gallery in DUMBO, Brooklyn for the “Black Lives Matter” exhibition. I have a couple of other shoots that I will be assisting in the next coming couple of weeks. What is also great is this internship is not strictly office work. It is all half on location and half in office, which was communicated with me before the hiring process began.

    3) The only way I can improve my internship experience is by keeping my focus and learning more. This internship is giving me so many opportunities to learn and grow as a future filmmaker, and I would not change the direction of this journey. My boss has grown to become a new mentor in my life, and is showing me the ins and outs of his company and the industry in general. I must say I absolutely love working for CINQUA and I am excited to see where this experience takes me.
