Hello Interns!
In a few sentences, state where you are working and what your primary responsibilities are. Then, please post your thoughtful responses to the following questions:
1. What have you learned about working in the media that you did not know before your internship? Include here processes and procedures, job titles, you never knew of, how companies interact with other companies, and so on.
2. Is the internship what you expected? Why, or why not?
3. Is there any way you could improve your internship experience? Explain how.
Remember this post should be like a journal entry. It is your thoughts and experiences and there are no right or wrong answers. However, it is a required assignment and proper grammar, spelling, thoughtfulness will count.
Also, feel free to comment on each others' posts.
Please post your comments as a comment to my post.
Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Stephanie Dunbar and I am interning at ABC's The View as a production intern. I get to shadow the producers all day and help distribute rundowns, perform duties backstage during the show, run any errands that need to be done, as well as perform general office duties.
1. I've had a production internship before at The Late Show with David Letterman, but The View is different because it is live. There is a lot more stress and pressure to get things done. I've also been able to distinguish more between a supervising producer, executive producer, segment producer, etc.
2. I didn't know what to expect coming in. I decided it would probably be similar to my previous production internship, which it is, but I find that The View is a bit more timid on what the allow interns to do. The Late Show valued their interns as part of the team. We had jobs to do that without which the show wouldn't be able to go on. Here, the duties are a bit more "intern-y" which is fine, but coming from a place where I felt like I had a real purpose, it's a little bit of a let down. That being said, I love that happy chaos that occurs before and during the live show. I like thinking on my feet and the fast paced environment.
3. To improve my experience, I think I could probably allow myself to ask more questions. Since it's still early on I want to wait until I know the appropriate time to ask questions so I don't disturb anyone when they're busy, but I definitely think asking more questions will help.
Overall, The View is going well and I'm excited to be there for the start of a new season with new show runners and a new panel of hosts. I hope everyone has a great semester!
Stephanie
This semester I am a web intern for Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. I have multiple responsibilities including sharing posts with affiliates, writing short celebrity gossip pieces for the website, editing content using Photoshop and Dreamweaver, and creating shareable content for social media.
ReplyDelete1. Working with the members on the show has taught me a lot about how fast paced a live morning show is. I have learned that one has to stay on top of the latest stories coming out, the website has to be constantly updated as topics are discussed on the show, and content always has to be shared with affiliates so listeners in other states can be kept updated. I have also learned that videos can be a great asset for the website so listeners can see what is going on behind the scenes, and staying active on multiple mediums such as Google+, Pinterest, Vine, and Twitter can reach a great number of people, thus generating interest and increasing listenership.
2. I had an idea of what to look forward to since I had interned with the show in the past. So far, being a web intern has been incredible and more than I expected. I have a love for pop culture and celebrity gossip so getting to write pieces on them never feels like work. The fact that I am trusted with working on the main website and social media sites as well as allowed to attend the station meetings makes me feel like I really am a part of the team.
3. As of right now, I do not think that there is any way I could improve my internship experience. Any questions I may have are always answered, I get the opportunity to network, I thoroughly enjoy doing the tasks that I am assigned, and I get to work alongside a group of highly experienced and talented people.
I’m excited to see what the rest of the semester brings!

Hi guys! My name is Alexa Tanney and I'm interning at Al Roker Enterainment, Inc. which is a full production company founded by Al Roker (yes the NBC weatherman!)
ReplyDelete1) I have done production assistant jobs for media companies before, however this is my first internship! I have learned so far that in a full-service production company there are so many jobs and titles for employees and a lot more departments than I thought. The job titles at ARE run all the way from development to research and writing, to casting, production, post production/editing, and then distribution to networks. So far, interning here has showed me that the production world is very quick and fast paced, as soon as an idea comes about in development, people are right on task to research much deeper into said idea, to try and come up with a full game plan for a show/series before another company does. There's so much depth and work that goes into just coming up with an idea for a series and it's really a team effort. Everyone in the company works together in one way or another, no department is alone because they all have to rely on each other to assist in one way or another.
2) The internship is not what I expected, it's way cooler! I was under the assumption that I would be doing much more clerical work (copies, stocking, filing) but, I get to do so much more. I am able to work directly with the head of development to pitch ideas and help in research and casting. As well because I have experience with Final Cut Pro, I am able to assist in transcribing and post-production! It's a lot of fun to put my experience in classes to use in a company and be able to showcase my abilities.
3) At the moment, I cannot see me improving my internship experience (it's my first week, so this may change) but so far, I'm really enjoying the position and I look forward to seeing what the rest of the semester brings!
-Hi, this is Aurthi Rahman. I am currently working at ZEFR as an Executive Intern to assist the SVP & EVP of Media Solution Sales along with the Account Executives of the company. My primary responsibilities as an intern are to research potential clients & help manage existing client accounts. I also assist in scheduling, coordinating & organizing internal/external meetings, and provide general office support to the Sales/Marketing team as needed.
ReplyDelete1- ZEFR’s website proudly boasts that “ZEFR is the leading technology company that empowers brands to discover and target their most important influencers, fans and topics in video”. We all upload videos on YouTube and share it with the world, but I never knew the influence fans could have on a brand. Usually media companies mainly track the number of clicks an ad receives, but ZEFR has made huge strides to allow even more visibility into user trends and analytics. Using ZEFR’s proprietary brand management software now allows businesses to delve deeper into the YouTube platform and discover fan-created videos and comments that may have initially gone unnoticed. While “Google preferred” focuses on the top 5 percent of the most popular content in areas like entertainment and food, ZEFR’s focus is on the 95 percent who also have a major affect on a brand. This process creates more data than any other YouTube partner.
Although ZEFR’s organization is broken down into separate departments, such as Finance and Business Development, the majority of the company is comprised of the Tech and Sales team. The Account Executives, Sellers, VP’s, EVP’s, & SVP’s all reach out to potential clients with specific sales pitches to increase revenue. The junior level employees reach out to other junior level clients while the SVP, VP & EVP reach out to higher-level clients.
2. Working at a start-up company definitely has its perks. I did not expect the environment to be as relaxed as it is; for example, everyone causally interacts with the CEO. ZEFR is a place where people are excited to come to work everyday. The company creates a fun and productive work environment, where people cooperatively work with one another to promote both personal and professional growth. The weekly-catered lunch, free snacks & coffee, casual dress code and daily happy hour are just the standards!
3. I am really not sure how I can improve my internship experience. I started in August & even though it’s only been 2 months in this internship, from the start I have been treated as a regular employee and given many responsibilities, which have allowed me to learn a lot about this industry. I'm also stoked about ad-week which is from 9/29-10/3. Monday Sept 29th is ZEFR's huge industry event at LAVO featuring DJ Kaskade (who just happens to be our CEO's brother)! I really feel lucky to be a part of this team & hope to keep good relationships with my colleagues & stay in touch for any future openings. Oh, and as a freelance make-up artist, I want to create my own YouTube brand page. Working at ZEFR will allow me to take advantage and learn more about YouTube branding.
Hi everyone, this is my very first internship experience! My name is Kristiana Palmer and I am working at the luxurious fashion house of Ralph Rucci. It is an American Haute Couture fashion house. My primary responsibilities are focusing on media, marketing, branding, and PR initiatives involved in the day-to-day operations. I deal with branding where my responsibilities include meeting with editors and stylists and merchandising the collection with an editorial eye. I am also communicating with major publications regarding allocation and placement of Ralph Rucci pieces that end up being publicized in major magazines such as W Magazine, InStyle, Vogue, Town and Country, and so many more. I collaborate and relate marketing proposals to the sales team to ensure we are promoting items that can increase company revenue. I am also able to observe and work with their runway production company, focusing on videography, lighting, and sound. I am also involved in the company’s digital marketing and their digital and social media presence across multiple platforms. They recently just launched their website (www.ralphrucci.net), where I have been involved in further development and maintenance of the site.
ReplyDelete1.) I have learned a mass amount since I have started my internship. This involves how the company I am working for interacts with other companies. For starters, I had no idea that fashion houses lend out pieces (their brand) to major stylists for editorial and publicity purposes. This allows the company to market their brand in a unique fashion. It allows the brand, Ralph Rucci to be exposed to whoever picks up a magazine, is involved in high profile events. I just did not connect it in my brain before being introduced to this internship position. It is really cool because I get to really understand how public relations kicks in where I collaborate with stylists and select the pieces for the models to wear that end up being in major magazines like being on the cover or in an issue of Vogue. The other day I chose an outfit for Nicki Minaj to wear for a shoot. Same goes for events, about two weeks ago I got to collaborate and select an outfit for the lead actress to wear to her premiere of the new television show, Gotham – I also selected pieces for her to wear on set for the Jimmy Fallon show. Very recently I have been collaborating with Gwyneth Paltrow’s stylist where the famous actress will be a great marketing tool where she will sport Ralph Rucci to many high profile events. It is so neat that I am able to truly market and advertise for Ralph Rucci by selecting pieces and collaborating with editors and stylists, I had no idea that this even existed! This company is so unique that I never knew such a business existed where there is a complete business and creative side with many different departments.
2.) This internship is even more than I expected because I absolutely love learning and this internship has a plethora of insight that I find to be a very beneficial use of my time. I am being introduced to many different approaches and techniques of connecting and working with the media. I learned so much by working with the production team the day before and the day of the fashion show. I did not expect them to allow me to really help out and be a part of the entire process from building the entire runway to helping and observing the installation of lighting, and sound. Being able to assist with the videography was such neat experiences because it was shot live online for the whole world to see as the fashion show was happening.
3.) This Internship is everything I have ever hoped for. If I could improve my internship experience it would be to be able to work every single day so I can learn even more than I am now.
Hi everyone, My name is Benji Goldsmith and I am currently interning at SiriusXM radio. I am a production intern in the sports division and I work more specifically on a show called "Moving the Chains". As part of my responsibilities, I create audio highlights, book and greet guests, and research things that my producer asks me to help him with.
ReplyDelete1) Last semester I worked for a sports TV station called SportsNet New York where I learned a lot about live TV production. this internship is very different because it is radio and I mostly deal with audio editing rather than video. I would say that the obvious difference between TV and radio is what I was most eager to learn about. On a TV show, the producer has to think about content along with visuals and graphics while at Sirius, we're mostly just dealing with content. I usually create audio highlights to open and close the radio show as well as book guests to appear on the show. I really learned how to work with other companies professionally because I have to create a good relationship with PR departments from different football teams so that they will help me in providing a good guest for our show. Another thing that I have enjoyed watching is how the shows all come together. There are many different jobs on the show like Producer, Assistant producer, Board Operator, Hosts, and upper management who oversee all of them. They don't micro-manage which gives each individual the freedom to be creative in their own work. That is very important because it results in each show being more and more original. It's hard to find two shows that are just alike because there are so many different people's opinions and work that go into making the show happen.
2) For the most part, this internship has been what I expected it to be in terms of the work they have me doing. The part that I didn't expect was being surrounded by so many different types of entertainment. SiriusXM is really a huge center of all different types of entertainment that I can always go and chat with the music guys or the people in talk radio and really learn about all that is going on around me.
3) I wouldn't change anything about the internship yet. The only thing that I would like is more responsibilities or maybe other types of jobs that I can do to help the show. But It's still very early and I know that as things go along, I will be given more responsibilities. For now I am just taking it all in.
Hi my name is Keith Collins and I'm interning at Saturday Night Live . I'm working in the photography department. My primary responsibilities are to be the support for the photography department ; setting up lighting and backdrops for the photos shoots , testing camera equipment, changing lenses, and also some work that's typical of internships; coffee/lunch runs, and other assorted errands.
ReplyDelete1. One thing I've learned about working in a live television setting, is that flexibility in your timing is an absolute must. Working with high profile guests demands a lot from production, because your time with them is so limited, if a shoot takes 2 minutes too long, it could be a problem. Work efficiency is critical.
2.This internship is greater than I expected. I thought the interns work detail would be somewhat compartmentalized, but we are thrown right in the mix. The studio is actually very small so you have access to just about everyone who works on the show. Also, they value the interns just like full time employees. Like I said earlier, we are immediately thrown in the mix and have real work to do. We aren't just sitting around waiting to get coffee. There is more than enough work to go around.
3. Honestly, they couldn't do anymore for the interns. We are look at as peers, with just as much respect as other staff members. We have full access within our departments, have plenty of time to network, it's paid, and the mentors I work under will always take time to answer any questions or concerns about our work. Needless to say, I love working for SNL and NBC as a whole.
